Shirataki Noodles

The benefits of  Shirataki noodles are many. Being made of plant roots, they are zero fat, zero calories, and totally high fiber food. The fiber is known as glucomannan. When the glucomannan noodles used substitute for starchy noodles, they may help lower the blood sugar level, control cholesterol, and help losing weight. Considering the fact of “zero”, food manufacturers start to add tofu in the Shirataki noodles to give them some nutritious ingredient. Tofu is the good source of protein.

Natural food is becoming the trend in recent years. People’s enthusiasm of searching for healthy and better daily food choices has encouraged research and food industry to explore and produce natural food. These products not only provide daily needed energy but also bring a lot of benefits, such as lower blood pressure, adding fabric to diet, or helping losing weight. Shirataki noodles are one of these kinds. They are made out of plant roots, which are non-fat, high fiber. Shirataki noodles are popular in Asia. They were first made in Japan, and became popular in other Asian countries.

Shirataki noodles do taste like anything, or you can say they are tasteless.  When cooked, they can be softened and added with different spices or soap. Maybe tasteless is a good thing, because people can make the noodles to their personal tastes and preferences.

Growing up in an Asian country, I ate quite a few glucomannan food and noodles. I really like them, I like adding them to my homemade soup. I first cook the noodles in boiling water for a few minutes until the noodles reach the softness that I want, and then make sure with green leaves (such as spinach) and a little bit chicken breasts thin slices (for flavor purpose). Add the soup to the cooked noodles, taste the flavor. You can add a little bit of soy source, sesame oil if you like. They will make wonderful noodle soup.
